MAHONE BAY, LUNENBURG AND BEYOND

We are thoroughly enjoying our stay in Mahone Bay. It is a peaceful, picturesque little town on the water, with three beautiful old churches lined up to greet you as you drive into town.

This whole area reminds me of Linden, Washington, with its beautifully manicured yards, surrounding vibrantly colored Victorian homes, and so many of the houses have a story.
It hasn't taken long for us to realize how friendly Nova Scotians are, and how happy and eager they are to offer tips and bits of history.
We are staying at the Heart's Desire B&B.....named by previous owners who were from a little town in Newfoundland by the same name. The neighboring towns are named Heart's Content and Heart's Delight and.....are you ready for this......and this is true, you can get on the google....just down the road from Dildo, Newfoundland.
We didn't venture far last night, as we were sooooo tired, just across the road from our B&B,  to the Mug and Anchor pub, to sit on the deck overlooking the water with a gorgeous view of the boats. This picture is taken sitting on the front porch of our B&B.

Hearts Desire B&B is fabulous, I highly recommend it. The owners Denise and John are real characters, and very helpful. After an amazing breakfast, we drove the 10 km to Lunenburg. A very colorful town, with more of the brightly painted homes and shops.

The town was founded and cleared in 1751-53 by Swiss, German and French immigrants. It has some of the earliest churches in Canada. During the prohibition days, Rum running boats were built here.
It is also the home of the Bluenose II.

Meet Captain Tom....
There is a beautiful and touching memorial to all the fishermen that have been lost to the sea.

We had a great lunch of Haddock and chips.....
I seem to have forgotten that I don't eat fish....and then carried on, taking a cable ferry to LaHave.....cute little Bakery, great artisan market, pretty little spot.....
We also hit Crescent beach where you can drive along the beach for quite a distance....we didn't, but we did have a great walk.

We also discovered a great quirky art gallery in Petit Rivière.

All in all, a great day, capped off by an amazing dinner at Rebecca's Restaurant, again sitting on a patio with a great water view, 2 blocks from our B&B.
Heading south tomorrow....stay tuned

  2. So glad you found the bakery in LA Havre. Our B&B host sent us there. Wonderful lunch and of course cookies for the B&B. Your weather looks wonderful.
