Today we are heading into Bamberg, one of the few cities in Germany not destroyed by WWII bombing. It is the largest town to retain its medieval structures. The town is sited on seven hills, and bisected by rivers and canals. In the 17th century, the Bamburg Witch Trials occurred and 5 of the towns mayors....all men, were identified as accomplices to witches and burned at the stake.
On a lighter note, the town is also known for its Rauchbier "smoke beer". It is made by drying the malt over an open flame. We look forward to sampling it.
UPDATE..... The smokey beer is wonderful, on first sip we were all a bit hesitant, but after a few more sips, we quite enjoyed it.
